Staycations and Vacations Abound in Staten Island
Staten Island, also known as Richmond County, is the southernmost of New York City's five boroughs. Its population of 495,747 (2020 Census) makes it the least populous of the City’s boroughs. The Island is roughly shaped like a triangle and is 13.9 miles long and 7.3 miles wide. Its area of 57.5 square miles makes it the third largest borough in the City of New York.
It is connected by one of the country’s longest suspension bridges, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, to the borough of Brooklyn. Lower Manhattan is directly accessible via the Staten Island Ferry, which carries 70,000 people daily (22 million per year) across New York Harbor. Staten Island is also connected to New Jersey by three bridges: the Outerbridge Crossing, the Goethals Bridge and the Bayonne Bridge.
Staten Island is home to several award winning colleges and universities including the College of Staten Island (part of the City University of New York system), and Wagner College, as well as exceptional healthcare facilities such as Staten Island University Hospital/Northwell Health and Richmond University Medical Center.
Numerous cultural institutions such as the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, the St. George Theater, the Staten Island Zoo, and the National Lighthouse Museum, among many others, provide a wide variety of arts and entertainment options for residents and visitors alike. Known as the “Borough of Parks,” the island has limitless opportunities for hiking, biking and enjoying the natural world as well.
About Staten Island Economic Development Corporation:
The Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) is the community's only borough-wide economic development organization focused on improving the business environment and promoting appropriate development that ultimately leads to additional employment opportunities for residents.
Staten Island has so much to offer, and tourism represents a tremendous opportunity to support local businesses while introducing those from off island all that the community has to offer.
Thanks to a grant from the Staten Island Foundation, SIEDC has undertaken the creation of Tour Staten Island to make it easier for locals and visitors to plan a visit to our shores.
